Managing Director, Donor Experiences and Engagement

Location: US-Based Home Office

Status: Exempt; Full Time

Salary Range*: $176,500 - $195,000 (M5, B11)

Start Date: Immediate

Facing History & Ourselves is a global education non-profit organization that challenges teachers and students to use lessons of history to stand up to racism, antisemitism, and other forms of bigotry and hate.

The newly created Managing Director, Donor Experiences and Engagement will partner closely with the Chief Development Officer, the Vice President of Development, and the senior Development team to develop, build on, and execute a centralized, sophisticated and comprehensive donor experience program for Facing History supporters and board members across all stages of the donor journey.

As a member of the Senior Development team, the Managing Director is responsible for:

  • Leading a team responsible for delivering on donor communications, donor experiences and the tools needed for impactful stewardship strategies and revenue growth

  • Shaping how Facing History engages, retains, and grows support from its donors at all levels.

  • Partnering with fundraising, executive, and programmatic leadership, helping to translate the organization’s mission and priorities into inspiring and actionable donor experiences.

  • Liaising with departments across the organization (Program, Development, Regional teams, etc.) to develop and implement the donor engagement strategy.

The Managing Director will supervise the following positions:

  • Senior Director, Event Strategy & Operations (and a team of 4)

  • Development Specialist, Stewardship and Annual Giving

  • Development Assistant, Stewardship

  • Opportunities to grow the team in the coming years

The MD will partner closely with:

  • Frontline fundraisers across all Facing History regions

  • Marketing and Communications staff

  • Board and Leadership Relations team

Roles & Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership & Integration

  • Strategic Architecture: Build and oversee a centralized donor experience program that aligns with Facing History’s long-term growth and campaign goals.

  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Serve as a primary liaison between Development, Program, and Marketing to ensure programmatic work and impact is translated and shared with donors at all levels .

  • Team Leadership: Direct a multidisciplinary team (Communications, Stewardship, Events) fostering a culture of high-performance, change management, and continuous professional development.

  • Planned Giving: Oversee (in partnership with the CDO and the VP) planned giving efforts at the organization with the goal of overall growth. The short-term goals will focus on supporting fundraisers in securing planned gifts and producing planned giving collateral necessary to grow the program.

  • Annual Fund: In partnership with frontline fundraisers, build a program to engage “annual fund/mid-level donors” (donors not assigned to a portfolio) to ensure this cohort is cultivated, solicited and stewarded in a consistent and customized fashion to boost retention and growth.

Donor Communications & Narrative Strategy

  • Integrated Planning: Develop and lead the execution of comprehensive donor communication plans, moving beyond content creation to strategic messaging frameworks targeting donors at all levels.

  • Content Curation: Oversee all writing for the department to produce all donor facing content (newsletters, gift acknowledgements, donor collateral, annual report, etc.)

  • Institutional Voice: Ensure all donor-facing touchpoints reflect a consistent, sophisticated, and mission-aligned voice.

  • Impact Reporting: Design and implement a robust stewardship engine that proactively proves the impact of philanthropic investment, particularly for Leadership and Board-level donors.

Events & Stewardship

  • Events and Experiences: Oversee the events strategy, shifting from tactical execution to the design of high-touch experiences that deepen donor relationships. Lead on design and execution (in partnership with Senior Director Events) of the bi-annual Leadership Summit and all Learning Trips/Excursions. Establish comprehensive and unique donor engagement opportunities, both virtual and in-person (classroom visits, professional learning, executive coffee talks, etc.).

  • Executive Engagement: Partner with the VP, CDO, CEO and the Director, Board & Leadership Relations to create bespoke engagement experiences and tools for board and leadership + donors.

Essential Skills and Qualities:

  • Minimum of 10+ years of related development and stewardship experience - ideally background in building stewardship/donor engagement programs

  • Demonstrated experience building relationships with donors and key external stakeholders.

  • Background in frontline fundraising is ideal.

  • Experience in liaising across organizational functions and teams

  • Strong project management skills

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • 8+ years of experience supervising and leading teams

  • Experience having worked across multiple sites and/or regional offices

Remote-first/Hybrid Work Model (US Home Based): Facing History & Ourselves operates in a remote-first/hybrid work model, allowing staff flexibility in both schedules and work locations. This particular position is home-based. Travel is required.
