Director, Foundation Relations

Status: Full Time; Exempt


Position Overview:

As a member of Facing History’s development team, the Director works to develop strategy and secure revenue from foundations whose funding priorities support and match the organizational goals and objectives of Facing History and Ourselves.  The Director will be responsible for managing a team of experienced grant writers in multiple locations and working in collaboration with regional development directors and executive directors to grow our grants pipeline and build capacity for Facing History to increase support from federal grants, foundations and corporate foundations. 

We are looking for a strategic and operational leader for a team of three full time grant writers and contract grant writers as needed who manage grants for our organization and our regional  offices. Facing History is at the stage of our organizational development where we are investing in expanding our base of institutional partners and diversifying our grant portfolio. We are in search of a leader who is comfortable managing through strategic transition and would enjoy helping to build the capacity of the organization to fundraise with institutions. The ideal candidate will have experience with developing strategies with foundations, managing all stages of the grant cycle, exceptional writing skills, organizational leadership experience, a passion for our mission, and the ability to build trust and relationships both in the grants team and across the organization.

 

Director, Foundation Relations Responsibilities:

  • Tell a compelling story about Facing History’s mission, programs, and development opportunities to institutional funding prospects and current donors.

  • Bring a deep understanding of foundations and identifying those with a strong match to Facing History’s mission, strategy and programs.

  • Bring a collaborative and practical leadership style. 

  • Implement strategies for reaching yearly and long-term incremental revenue goals to support programmatic and organizational priorities to diversify funding sources.

  • Develop a robust pipeline of highly aligned foundation prospects to support the long-term revenue needs of Facing History, lead effective weekly pipeline meetings and balance the need for development staff to both prioritize warm opportunities and still leave capacity for cold calls.

  • Project manage grant proposals for the national organization and support the members of the grant team as they project manage regional grant proposals.

  • Oversee the full life cycle of grants, from prospecting through grant reporting and finally to maintaining accurate electronic grant files.

  • Maintain process and language consistency across the organization.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain retention strategies for Facing History’s current institutional donors. 

  • Partner with regions development teams, program staff, and head office executives to build strong working relationships with foundations locally, nationally, and internationally.

  • Provide strong editorial guidance and attention to detail for letters of inquiry, concept papers, proposals, and reports to the grant writers on staff.

  • Project manage a wide variety of tasks while meeting all deadlines and budget requirements.

  • Forecast annual grant revenue, and closely monitor the progress of the grant pipeline and track the pacing of the grant revenue.

  • Work with project staff and finance department to monitor effective implementation of grant requirements and compliance.

  • Liaise across departments and functions as needed to support successful grant results.

  • Balance the team’s grant writing with other occasional writing requests, such as proposals for major donors.

  • Position based in Brookline, MA with 10-15% travel likely.

 

Skills and Experience:

  • 5+ years in working with nonprofits and foundations and at least 2+ years management experience

  • Ability to work both independently without close oversight, but also a team player who will proactively engage with others

  • Track record in meeting annual revenue goals

  • Familiarity with common grant-making tools and processes

  • Comfort and familiarity with using Salesforce (or similar system) and willingness to take a lead role in helping drive the broad adoption of a CRM throughout an organization

  • Understanding of the importance of using CRM data, trends, and research data to shape decisions

  • Exceptional data analysis skills and an ability to also maintain an eye on best practices and market trends

  • A process and operations-driven mindset

  • Proven ability to effectively develop and steward long-term relationships with funders 

  • Relationship-building and interpersonal skills which enable trust-building with internal and external stakeholders

  • Organizational and project management skills with strong attention to detail

  • An open learner who is interested in being a proactive, positive member of the team

  • Experience with supervising, mentoring and working with a team, where some members are remote

  • Comfort with working in an organization with a national headquarters and multiple field offices 

  • A BA/BS degree

  • A background in K-12 education, a definite plus
