Communications Intern

Facing History is seeking short-term interns to join our team!

Description of project:

1st Major project: Assist with migrating an archive of old blog posts from a Hubspot subdomain to our main website, which is hosted on Drupal. This work could include reviewing and updating outdated links and copy in the old posts, building new pages for the blog posts on facinghistory.org, and setting up redirects for the posts.

Additional projects the intern could work on, if time allows (training in what these things mean and how to perform these tasks will be provided:

  • Assist with updating meta-titles (also called title tags) to clearly indicate the content type of a page in the context of search engine results.

  • Assist with removing and redirecting pages that house single images to more substantive webpages that use the image in the context of a larger block of text.

  • Assist with reviewing a list of pages that have similar content and helping to implement a strategy to clearly differentiate them, which could include rewriting titles, consolidating similar pages, and suppressing some duplicate content from search

2nd Main project: After every staff meeting, create a written summary of what happened. The intern will create a transcript of the meeting and pull out key information and then craft it into a cohesive email.

Qualifications and/or Skills:

  • Strong written communication skills

  • Detail-oriented and independent

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Experience with web content management preferred, but not required

  • Quick learner

This could be a great fit for a library science student or a student interested in digital communications, not just someone studying marketing

Date needed: Flexible: this summer, but could be earlier.

Estimated time commitment: 3-6 months

Pay: this is a paid position $18/hr

Schedule: We can be flexible to accommodate different U.S. time zones and other responsibilities the intern has, but I would like the intern to be available during Facing History’s regular business hours (9-5) a minimum of 5 hours/week for check-ins/ease of communication.

Open to every day if availability allows or part-time for a longer period of time. The projects identified could keep an intern busy on an ongoing basis, but don’t have to be a full-time commitment.

A description of the Internship program:

Internships at Facing History and Ourselves are typically a mixture of core projects and administrative support. Interns are paired with direct supervisors and the intern is assigned projects based on the need of Facing History and the individual supervisor, and the Intern’s interests. Interns have access to learning opportunities that expose participants to Facing History content and teaching approach.

Internships are remote/virtual and are managed through our Human Resources office We provide orientation, regular check-ins, an opportunity to connect with other Interns (if applicable), participation in staff meetings and social events, exposure to our core work, access to our resources, and access to our Employee Resource Groups. At the end of the internship we ask that you share a report of the projects you worked on.

We expect the intern to follow a consistent schedule, work diligently, ask questions, and request new projects when appropriate. Business etiquette is expected. You will be asked to read and abide by our Anti-Harassment and Youth Protection Policies as well as our Data Security, Acceptable Use, and Written Information Security policies. Parental sign off is required for anyone under 18 years of age. All internships are remote. Interns are gifted with a Facing History resource of their choice at the end of the internship.
